Places to Go in the Moravian Karst.

Visitors of the Moravian Karst can make several interesting trips during their stay in this Protected Landscape Region. Visiting the village of Vavřinec and climbing up the observation tower Podvrší u Veselice is one of them. This place can then be a starting point for a all-day hiking trip.

Podvrší observation tower stands on a hill of the same name located in the village of Veselice. Veselice together with three other villages (Vavřinec, Suchdol and Nové Dvory) make a single cadastral territory of Vavřinec. The total number of inhabitants is 820 and the altitude is approx. 550 m above the sea level. The village offers its visitors possibilities to spend their free-time all the year. Hiking and cycling are among the activities for which there are very good conditions. The observation tower is an alternative to "on-ground" exploration of the Moravian Karst with its natural beauties and 4 accessible caves as it offers splendid views of the Karst area, Drahany Highland and Czech-Moravian Highland. The visit of the observation tower will surely contribute to clearer understanding of Karst landscapes and environment. If you travel by car, stop at a car park next to the Culture House in the village of Veselice. It is approx. 10 minutes walk from the car park to the observation tower. Here you can join a hiking trail that will take you to some of the famous sights in the region. Follow a blue trail blaze and in Obůrka village turn left on a green one leading to Nové Dvory. After a 1.5 km walk through a lime alley and a forest you´ll find Blansek Castle ruins and a signpost for Desert Valley ("Pustý žleb"). It is not far from Desert Valley to the renowned Punkva Caves ("Punkevní jeskyně") - just follow a blue trail blaze. However, it is highly recommended to book the visit of the caves - by telephone (+420 516 413 575) or by fax (+420 516 415 379). Another place of interest, Macocha abyss, can be reached from the Punkva Caves by cable car or on foot (up a blue and red trail blaze). You can also visit Catherine´s Cave ("Kateřinská jeskyně") located some 2 km from Punkva Caves, near Skalní mlýn Tourist Information Centre and a car park. It is possible to buy souvenirs at Skalní mlýn or refresh yourself in local restaurant. At Punkva Caves and Macocha abyss you can either join the road to Blansko or a red trail blaze leading through Desert Valley to the village of Sloup. In Blansko you can visit Blansko Museum with a range of expositions (e.g. cast-iron production) and then make for Veselice again up a blue trail blaze. If you get hungry on the way, stop at the restaurant "U Jiřího" in the village of Obůrka, well-known for its delicious cuisine. Sloup is an alternative to the town of Blansko. You can visit here Sloup-Šošůvka Caves ("Sloupsko-šošůvské jeskyně" - even without the ticket reservation) as well as a pilgrimage church of Virgin Mary of Seven Sorrows build during years 1751 - 1754. A blue trail blaze will take you from Sloup back to Veselice. None of the two trails - to Blansko or to Sloup - is much demanding. What is more, they go mostly through forests in a lovely countryside of the Moravian Karst.

Other tourist sights in the region ale located north-west of Veselice: Rájec-Jestřebí chateau, the town of Boskovice with its castle, chateau and WILD WEST CITY holiday resort, Lysice chateau and, last but not least, Černá Hora brewery, offering guided tours and refreshment. Other sights are to be seen south-east of Veselice: Balcarka Cave in Ostrov u Macochy and windmill and karst research exposition in Rudice. Jedovnice town is much visited thanks to its pond called Olšovec suitable for bathing. Hikers and cyclist can stay in local camping "Olšovec". Worth mentioning is also a new chapel in the village of Šošůvka.
